In my degree project i have choosen to study on how different people with different cultural backgrounds relate to the inclusive task. As a pedagogue, I wanted to find out the opportunities which are created in relation to multiculturalism in art classroom. I conduct many workshops with different groups of informants in Sweden and in Iran to find out how the students solve the same image task. An image which by its very character is inclusive, but requires the use of culturally-bound images?

The investigation consists of two parts, a scientific text, and an artistic interpretion. Here I will show you a visual abstract, an abstract picture as an introduction to my investigation.

When you have a meaningful meeting with a friend, it commonly means a sharing of thoughts and feelings we carry within ourselves. Personal insights and amusing thought experiments sometimes arise in such circumstances. You can end up in states of mind where the thoughts are succeeding each other like a magnetic pulsating rail can move a train without wheels. It is material of thought that can not be edited or thought out in advance. Something new arises, grows and stretches out. It is transformed and recoded by the energy generated in the meeting.

I have seen my process as a friend. From the thoughts of our meetings, my work has evolved.

”The Monetary World” – globalization, repression, hate, escapism. I have developed my own patterns with that inspiration-sentence.

The aestetical inspiration I did find in chilean ethnical streetart, and in the easy graphical form-language of indigenous.

The work transformed more and more into an associative game with forms and symbols. I wanted to go deeper in a grid I had´t seen anyone else use. An experiment of the world in patterns. Something anthropological appeared. New ideas came up.

I wanted every pattern to have a strong expression so I worked a lot with dualities as:
Woman/man, black/white, power/repression, love/hate, one color/”every color”, god/evil, small/big, etc.

I was surprised of how much I could express with only one grid. How much could I see there? My associations developed more and more during the process – so to the conclusion that I could come up with as many as ever – and continue with the same width and variation. I already have sketches of 10 more which I want to complete. So it is going to be a ”The Monetary World II”. My ideas got more and more complicated which also made the work funnier.

The material I used I found on the streets – and it helped me to express a world captured in the frame of big multimillionaire companies which have all the power and continues to rule it.

The Monetary World

”The Monetary World”.

In the history of letters there have been many ancient forms of pictorial symbols that evolved into a few of our present day alphabets. With this project, I am interested in going backwards and inventing a new system of images representing letters. The resulting font is less readable but has a fresh aesthetic and opens up more possibilities in ways of use.

The user of this font can apply it to a letter, favorite song lyrics or any personal story. The body of text becomes a pattern of characters that in themselves are able to tell a new story by their combinations and placements.

In each of my experiments, the aim was to bring the text closer to a person’s everyday life. There are designs for wall papers composed out of a love letter, a patterned blanket made by a child’s favorite Pippi Longstocking song and a silk scarf translated from the first two paragraphs of Barbara Voors novel, ”Emmy Moréns Dubbla Liv”.

ABC Pattern Font

If form follows normative discourse in medical design, what happens to the gestalt when you include related discourses of the medical ventilator in the design process? My aim has been to integrate critical design and gender theory with an exploratory aesthetic approach. This aesthetic approach aimed to create an on going exchange between the development of concepts inspired by theory and the creative sketching of 3-D form.

After I had been working with the project for some time I started to realise that what I was refering to as a medical ventilator, was just seen by others as a “tube”. I decided to change the roles, and to work only on the tube, and not on the rest of the apparatus. When I made this discourse shift, I tried to understand why the tube had been neglected. The tube is de facto an essential part of the ventilator. It is the important link between the patient and the apparatus, and without it, there is no treatment. Despite of this, the ventilator tube is not prioritised by the medical design industry. I used gender theory about hierarchy of power and work division to understand this matter and came to a conclusion that everything close to the patient has low status.

My combined theoretical and explorative aesthetic approach didn’t only prove to change the gestalt, allowing for bodily form that challenges the false dichotomy of the hospital discourse. It also changed the entire focus on the product by making the tube central.

Some questions this design project attempts to discuss: What does it mean to give bodily form to this medical design project? How does the use of a tactility and haptics interface on a surface that may resemble a soft body help response from the staff and relatives as they encounter with the patient? In what way can the medical design process develop in a way to help patients regain humanity?

Founded by an illustrator, Bonobo Press is a new publisher with three main aims.

The first is to give new life to the humble quality pocket book through a careful consideration of materials, printing, design and typography. The second is to find new audiences and thereby generate new discussions for what it calls ”The Lost Classics”, works by great writers whose work for any number of social, political and economic reasons did not live past it’s own generation. The final aim is to encourage time spent away from computers and to help people see the rewards that time spent with a passionately made and well written book can have – a calming atmosphere for self-reflection and the opportunity to develop and articulate new ideas for personal and social change.

Bonobo Press

My project revolves around the notion of ” The End”. The theme works as point of departure for a number of projects going in different directions. It also functions as a platform for a reasoning around meaning, hope and responsability which will be presented as a text in a printed matter at the exhibition and deal with these subjects in relation to socitey at large and also in relation to the creative process and practice.
”The End” is something that in some way, is always connected to a process, either in a possible future or a certain past. A main interest in the project is the question of how a possible or likely end affects our way of dealing with the present.

”The Sun In Me” is a philanthropic-based project aimed at raising awareness and funds with regards to African women in exile and deadlocked with HIV/AIDS virus here in Sweden.

As an emphasis of the serious concern involved, this project has been supported by a 312 km walk from León to Santiago de Compostella in Spain. Unusual and radically revolutionary, all jewellery and corpus made for this Master’s thesis will be auctioned and proceeds will be donated to the AIDS organisation Noah’s Ark. The jewellery and corpus created are reminiscent of ancient African pottery traditionally reflective of a black woman’s social stature in society.

The Sun In Me
